Kakuen Peak, the main peak of Shosenkyo, the most beautiful valley in Japan, was named after the monk Kakuen, a disciple of Zen master Sawan, who practiced asceticism on the summit of the peak, which is large enough to spread several tatami mats. It is a scenic spot that was awarded first place in the ravine category of the National 100 Tourist Attractions and second place in the Heisei Hyakkei (One Hundred Famous Views of Japan).
