Experience 5,000 years of art in Nihonbashi and Kyobashi "Tokyo Art & Antiques 2025" starts on April 24! From ancient to cutting-edge contemporary art, a tour of art that transcends time and space
東京 アート アンティーク 実行委員会
Tokyo Art & Antiques Executive Committee is pleased to announce that the 15th "Tokyo Art & Antiques 2025 - Nihonbashi/Kyobashi Art Festival" will finally be held next week, April 24 (Thursday) to April 26 (Saturday), 2025.
An exhibition at MAYUYAMA & CO.,LTD, a long-established store of Oriental antique art located in Kyobashi 2-chome
The Nihonbashi/Kyobashi area in Chuo-ku, Tokyo, is one of the few art districts in the world where about 150 specialty stores specializing in antiques, crafts, Japanese paintings, and modern paintings have gathered since the postwar period. The area boasts a long history as a center of art and culture where the great writers, artists, and politicians of the Showa period gathered. Against the backdrop of the history and culture of this area, "Tokyo Art & Antiques" began in 1998 as the "Nihonbashi/Kyobashi Art & Antiques Festival" and has been held annually before Golden Week since 2010 when it was renamed the "Nihonbashi/Kyobashi Art & Antiques Festival.
This year, the event will focus on fostering the next generation of collectors and art enthusiasts by expanding the participatory learning program. Through interaction with owners and artists who have deep knowledge and love for art, we aim to connect its appeal from the present to the future.
In front of "Gallery Rin" in Kyobashi 2-chome, which deals with contemporary artists. Participating stores are marked by red flags.
At each store, visitors can take home a pamphlet filled with event and exhibition information and an accompanying map.
Tokyo Art & Antiques 2025" offers a wide variety of programs designed to bring the appeal of art to as many people as possible.
First, we will focus on nurturing the next generation, especially the younger generation, by providing them with encounters with high-quality works of art to deepen their understanding of and interest in art.
We have also enhanced our participatory programs, such as charity auctions, talk sessions, and gallery tours, so that even art novices can enjoy our programs. Through these experiences, we hope that visitors will experience that art works do not have to be expensive, that there are many works in the affordable price range, and that there is a big difference between viewing art in a museum and purchasing it and loving it at home.
Participating galleries are 86 commercial galleries and one organization that meet the criteria set by the committee. Visitors will be able to view works of art spanning approximately 5,000 years, from 3,000 B.C. to the present day, and enjoy a wide variety of art genres, from museum-quality ancient antiquities to cutting-edge contemporary art. Each gallery has its own unique exhibition theme, and we are also working to lower the barriers to entry for first-time visitors to our long-established galleries.
In addition, we also offer tips on how to incorporate art into your living space. Visitors can see how to incorporate art into their own homes, with florist Shiho Yokogawa using gallery vases to create "nageire" with seasonal flowers at five stores, and spatial coordinator Yumiko Sato using gallery works to create a space coordination corner at three stores.
The charity auction will feature a wide variety of works, including modern paintings, prints, ancient manuscripts, and Chinese antiques. 6 galleries will participate, and a portion of the proceeds will be donated to a charity organization selected by each gallery. The amount of donations for the past 4 editions is as follows. (Donation recipients vary from store to store.)
2018: 167,300 yen (9 stores participated)
2019: 155,000 yen (12 stores participated)
2023: 94,383 yen (6 stores participating)
2024: 97,145 yen (5 stores participating)
The goal is then to establish the brand image of the Nihonbashi/Kyobashi area as a "city of art and culture," promote the influx of young people, promote culture, and revitalize the local economy. We will strengthen cooperation with local businesses and contribute to raising awareness of the event and the development of the region as a whole.
