The Japan Buddhist Institute is pleased to announce the release of the Nanden Daizo Kyō, a Japanese translation of over 30,000 pages of Pali Buddhist scriptures, on the Institute's website, following the release of the SAT Taisho Shinnosyu Daizōkyō text database on the University of Tokyo's website.

The Japanese translation of the Pāli Buddhist scriptures, "Nanden Daizo Kyō," which consists of more than 30,000 pages, will be available free of charge from April 8 (Tue.), the Buddha's birthday.

What is the "Nanden Daizang Sutra (Pali Buddhist scriptures)"?

The Nanden Daizo Kyō is a Japanese translation of the Pali Buddhist scriptures of the Southern Theravada region.

It is a compilation of the "Sanzo" (sutras, rites, and treatises), which includes a vast collection of sutras that record the Buddha's words. This is the only complete preservation of the Sanzang in Pali, making it an important resource for Buddhist studies.

This Japanese translation of the Tripitaka consists of 65 volumes (70 books) and is one of the most traditional Buddhist scriptures from the south (Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Thailand, etc.).

History of the Publication of the Nanden Daizang Sutra

The Nanden Daizang Sutra was compiled in the early Showa period, following the Taisho Shinnosyu Daizang Sutra, a Chinese translation of the sutras compiled in the Taisho period. Therefore, the copyright protection period has already expired.

However, when the National Diet Library (https://www.ndl.go.jp/) attempted to make it available to the public, the publisher requested an injunction and the release was suspended, so it has not been made public until now.

However, since the library is already public intellectual property, we have decided to make it available to the public free of charge, based on the principle of creating an environment in which those who wish to study Buddhism can do so freely anytime, anywhere.

■About Mizuki Osanami, President of the Japan Buddhist Institute

Mizuki Osanami graduated from Higashi Katsushika High School in 1992, entered the University of Tokyo in 1995, and graduated from the University of Tokyo in 1999 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Basic Sciences I. He then studied quantum mechanics at the University of Tokyo, where he received a Master of Science degree in 1983. Later, he became convinced that his exploration of Buddhism would lead him to a deeper happiness than the quantum mechanics he had studied in college.
